UnitChef

About UnitChef

UnitChef exists because a cup of flour and a cup of sugar differ by 60 grams — and recipes pretend otherwise.

Volume measuring works for liquids and fails quietly for everything else: flour compacts, brown sugar packs, cocoa sifts, chopped nuts settle. The same "1 cup" spans a 20% weight range depending on technique — which is why two bakers can follow one recipe and bake two different cakes.

The database holds the standard weights — spooned-and-leveled cups, USDA-backed — for the ingredients that actually differ, with the density notes and substitution hints that make conversions safe.

We are cooks and educators, not a brand. Nothing here sells scales (but buy one), and the whole table works offline in your browser.

What makes UnitChef different

  • Your numbers never leave your browser. Every calculator on UnitChef runs entirely on your device. We never see, store, or transmit the figures you enter — there are no accounts and no server-side processing of your inputs.
  • Published methodology. Each calculator page explains the exact formula it uses and the assumptions behind it, so you can check our work or reproduce it in a spreadsheet.
  • Free, forever, without a paywall. UnitChef is supported by advertising. There is no premium tier, no email gate, and no upsell.

Independence

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any government agency, lender, insurer, or the organizations whose formulas and public data we reference (such as USDA food composition data and standard baker measures).
